Purpose: For Writing Task #2, you will continue your research on your topic.  You need to return to the library and select another article for your topic. For Writing Task #1, the focus was on developing an understanding of concepts in the text and shaping your response as a reader. Your purpose this time is to investigate how the reading is put together—paying attention to linguistic and rhetorical elements such as language, style, structure, imagery, evidence, authorial credibility, intended audience, etc.—in order to analyze how the author moves his or her readers to feel certain ways, agree or disagree with certain conclusions, understand the meaning or purpose of the writing, or decide on a particular course of action. What is the author trying to do in this writing, how does he or she go about it, and how well does he or she succeed?
Skills: The purpose of English 111 is to help you develop and practice writing and thinking skills essential to your success in college and in your professional life beyond school. Drawing on Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Domains, we will focus on developing writerly “moves” that characterize strong written communication. This assignment will ask you to practice the following writing skills: Understanding, Applying, Analyzing and Evaluating.
Knowledge: This assignment will focus on developing knowledge in the following course learning objectives:

  1. Understand communication theory and the roles audiences play in the writing process.
  2. Apply critical reading and thinking skills to the writing process.
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of language as a tool for learning and communication.
  4. Develop strategies for making independent, critical evaluations of student and published texts.
  5. Research and critically evaluate information to produce writing with APA and MLA formal documentation, which consists of in-text citations and final list of all sources cited.
  6. Write well-organized essays with a firm thesis and a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.
  7. Engage in pre-writing activities, including narrowing a topic, generating ideas, determining the audience and the relationship between audience and content, and setting an appropriate tone.
  8. Support a thesis statement with valid reasons and evidence.
  9. Follow the conventions of standard written English in sentence structure, punctuation, grammar and usage, and spelling.

 
Task: For this assignment, you will consider what it means to “analyze rhetorically” in order to better understand the author intentions and effectiveness in a text.
 
 
Your paper should address (in whatever order you feel appropriate) all of the following:

  • Introduce the reading. Give a brief summary of the article and some background on this topic. Include a thesis statement explaining your overall evaluation of the author’s argument and the effectiveness of the rhetorical choices made in the text.
  • Explain the role of the writer, their subject, the writer’s intended audience, and their intended purpose for making this argument. Use examples from the text to illustrate your points.
  • Consider the intended audience. What is their level of knowledge on the subject? What perspectives or biases are they likely to have?
  • Analyze the author’s use of methods of persuasion. How does the author appeal to the audiences’ sense of emotion and sense of reason? How does the author establish their own ethical creditability and the timeliness of the argument?
  • Analyze the author’s use of language and genre. Is the tone set for this text appropriate to the purpose and audience? Use examples from the text to illustrate your points.
  • Address any logical fallacies present in this text and/or any possible holes or gaps in the argument that the author fails to consider.

 
Criteria for Success: Writing Task #2 is worth a total of 150 points. A successful finished product will meet the following criteria:

Effective introduction to the reading and identifiable thesis that analyzes the author’s intentions or the effectiveness and purpose of the author’s rhetorical strategies.  
 
 
/20 pts.
Effective analysis of the reading demonstrated, with sufficient evidence to support your thesis.
 
 
 
/30 pts.
Appropriate organization and paragraphing with effective topic sentences and transitions.
 
 
 
/15 pts.
Effectively using sources: Appropriate and accurate interpretation of specific details from the reading, connected to accurately interpreted quotations and paraphrases.
 
 
 
 
/25 pts.
Conclusion offering insight into the significance or the larger context of this discussion.
 
 
 
/15 pts.
A minimum of 500 words (about 2 pages of double spaced typing).  
/15 pts.
Follows the guidelines for APA formatting and documentation. This includes formatting for the paper, in-text citations and a bibliography.
 
 
 
/15 pts.
Mostly follows the conventions of standard written English.  
/15 pts.
