Lincoln’s Inaugural Addresses: No President’s term of office was defined by war more sharply than Lincoln’s. His gave his First Inaugural Address (March 4, 1861) five weeks before the bombardment of Ft. Sumter and his Second Inaugural Address (March 4, 1865) five weeks before Confederate General Lee’s surrender. He died a week after that. Though the first speech offers a detailed explanation of Lincoln’s intentions upon entering the White House and the second one is quite brief, and mostly explained the work the nation had left to do as the war was ending, both speeches explained Lincoln’s policies as he considered them at that moment. Compare the tone and the content of the two speeches. Do you believe they were effective? The language skill of trying to persuade others by using spoken or written words is called “rhetoric.” Was “Honest Abe” a good rhetorician or not? In other words, what was Lincoln’s key point in each of these speeches and how well did he get it across? Which of the two speeches do you find most effective? Why?
