TOPIC: Linguistic Communities in NYC
New York City is among the most linguistically diverse cities in the world, with more than 800 languages spoken within the five boroughs.
This short final research paper requires that you research a linguistic community of your choice and consider how the language—or version of a language—is important to group identity. This could be a language with a small linguistic community, a dialect, a dying language, a made-up language. You could, of course, do a dialect of English or you could research your own non-English linguistic community.
Your paper must incorporate at least two outside sources (secondary research from books, journals, websites, etc.) and some original (primary) research involving an interview and/or observation, along with personal experience.
Your paper must have a main point or argument to make about this linguistic community that you support in your body paragraphs. This is not simply an “all about a language essay” but an examination of how a language is used, maintained, changed, etc. in New York. You should do some research before you decide on the main point.
Some questions to consider (but you can also come up with your own):
Who speaks this language (or version of this language)?
Where in the city is the language spoken?
Has the community changed over time? If so, how and why?
Has the language itself changed?
How is the language being preserved?
How is this language distinct from other similar languages or dialects?
Structure of Essay:
3-4 pages, double-spaced, titled, indented paragraphs.
Your introduction should introduce and include an argument about your subject matter.
The initial body paragraphs should present your research into this topic, followed by paragraphs that present your primary research and analysis.
You should include at least two outside sources, and a short Works Cited page which lists these sources in MLA format (I have posted a link to instructions for MLA below).
