In Unit 3 you will critique a selection of texts under five different critical lenses: psychoanalytic, feminist and queer studies, post-colonial theory, ecocriticism, and new historicism. Additionally, you will have presented a study of one of these criticisms as part of your group project. You will now be asked to demonstrate your ability to critique a piece of literature through another critical lens.
Prompt: You will select one or two texts from the course, and discuss how the use of one type of literary criticism helps us understand the stories on a deeper level. You may choose to focus on one story in depth, or compare how two stories make similar moves under the critical lens. You will discuss the stories using key terms and scholars relevant to the criticism, making clear you know how to use the theory, and where the information comes from in context with the rest of the critical theories. It is important that you still discuss the themes of the story, using literary devices, and how theme is enhanced by using the criticism. However, you thesis should not revolve around proving what you believe the theme is.
There are two criteria you must meet when selecting your topic:
You must use a criticism that you did not do a presentation on
You may not use a story that you wrote about in Essay #2
It is important that you create a discussion topic that is more specific than ‘feminism in “The Yellow Wallpaper.’” A more appropriate topic might be “How gender stereotypes in “The Yellow Wallpaper” lead us to believe that the narrator’s actions are insane.”
Your paper should be 6-8 pages long
Use MLA formatting guidelines, including 12pt. Times New Roman font
Proofread for basic errors and typos. This will affect your grade.
Use of first person writing will result in an automatic 5% loss of grade
Methods of Research:
Using MLA documentation standards, you will be required to cite:
the text you’re analyzing,
two (2) sources of relevant research related to current events or studies, highlighting their connection to the criticism and the story,
a minimum of one critical essay by a scholar in the field of criticism you have chosen to use in the essay. You must directly respond to how this scholar either informs your understanding of the story, or how you believe the story is going beyond what this research discusses.
a minimum of one source must be from the Valencia Database. Failure to do so will result in a 50%.
Your paper must be more than a book report. Do not summarize the text for more than 1-2 sentences at a time. You will need to analyze why these events are happening and what it causes a reader to experience or believe. You must use three-part structure to support your claims, provide research, and respond to the criticism. Research involves more than definitions and encyclopedia entries, and is never merely parroting the beliefs of another writer.
