Follow the instructions in the assignment drop box for the initial post and response posts. Note that the awarding of marks for these posts is mainly based on clarity of expression, relevance to the question asked, and support/evidence for your position. It is not based on the “rightness” of what you express, so state your view but make sure that it is done clearly, it is relevant to the topic, and it is supported with some degree of corroborating evidence.
There are three components to Assignment 1: a concise 300-word initial post to the most recent discussion forum question, and two response posts to the posts of other students.
The actual posts must be made in this discussion forum (so that they are visible to all other students in the course), while what you submit through the assignment drop box is one document that includes all three components (initial post and two response posts, clearly labelled) for grading purposes.
Instructions
Follow the instructions below for the initial post and response posts.
The actual posts must be made in the Assignment 1 Discussion Forum on the course’s home page (so that they are visible to all other students in the course), while what you submit through this drop box is one document that includes all three components (initial post and two response posts, clearly labelled) for grading purposes. Only your assigned tutor will view your actual submission, and only you will receive this submission back when your tutor has graded it. The actual student forum to which you will post is found under the Part 1 Study Guide on the course’s home page.
Initial Post (50 marks)
The assignment topic to which you will respond is described in the discussion forum. While the precise wording of the question will vary, it will deal with themes from Part 1 of the course (i.e., the basic distinguishing characteristics of the Canadian state, Canada in the context of globalization, and general approaches to the study of politics). Think about the question at hand in terms of the Part 1 course readings, your personal experience, and other sources where appropriate (although outside sources are not necessary and should only be used to supplement the course readings, not replace them). Good posts will directly address the question at hand and will provide clear, concise, and well-developed position statements in response to the question. This will require reflection and a little work; generally speaking, being concise, reasonably comprehensive, and well written requires some revision by a student before the answer is submitted.
When you are ready to write your initial post in the discussion forum, you can either click “Add a New Discussion Topic” and mention the topic in the subject heading or indicate “Initial Post” in the subject heading. This initial post is worth 50 percent of the assignment mark.
Response Posts (2 x 25 = 50 marks)
In your own words, respond in 150 words or less to what two other forum participants have stated in their initial post or in one of their response posts. A good response post will offer reasoned arguments that advance what others have stated in their initial posts or make considered criticism. In other words, tutors will award marks for adding something of value to the online discussion. The response posts are worth 25 marks each. Simply agreeing or disagreeing with a post adds nothing to the conversation; you must supply clear reasoning for whatever you add with some attention given to evidence. Be clear but respectful and courteous in your responses.
Once you have your comments posted, you also need to collate them into one document and submit them via the assignment drop box here for marking.
This is the topic question:
When reviewing Canadian constitutional history, the search for the proper accommodation of diversity and identity has been a recurring theme. Whether we look to MacDonald’s original federal compromise to recognize regional identities (Cochrane, Blidook, and Dyck) or Pierre Trudeau’s Charter in 1982 to accommodate the rights of individual Canadians, to the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accord’s attempts to achieve the recognition of regional distinctiveness and other minority group identities, there has been a constant search after the correct approach to Canadian diversity. Why do you think we have been engaged in this pursuit and what do you feel is the correct approach to recognize and accommodate the diversity in Canadian society? Explain why you hold this position. You may find it useful to peruse current political stories about diversity and identity issues on web sites such as CBC, CTV, The Globe & Mail, The National Post, or a credible local news site in your locality to help you consider this question.
Remember these guidelines as you complete your posts:
-the criteria for grading the initial post are clarity of expression, relevance to the question(s), and evidence/support for your claims;
-the criteria for grading the response posts are clarity of expression and the addition of new information to the initial post (simply agreeing or disagreeing is not sufficient, explain why);
-be courteous and respectful in making your posts.
