Addressed to me, Professor

Subject: Proposal for a Fall Semester 2018 Research Project:
(Put your topic on this second line)
Dear Professor Corbitt:
I am writing this letter as a formal response to the Request for Proposals (“RFP”) that was issued July 2,
2018, in the Advanced Technical Writing class for summer 2018.
My objective is to propose a student research project that will …
Action Verb: such as determine, design, improve, create, etc. Avoid verbs like study, explore, look at
… a brief statement of the solution you think is best for the problem you have studied.
Example:
My objective is to propose a student research project that will result in a recommendation to design
improved non-destructive diagnostic procedures for detection of delamination flaws in reinforced
concrete.
1. PROBLEM STATEMENT [2 to 4 paragraphs]
1.1 Introduction
Explain in a paragraph or two the summary of your entire proposal and your hopes for a solution. This is
probably going to be the last part you write, even though it appears first, because it’s a summary.
1.2 Background
In a paragraph or two, provide some research-based information to convince me that there is a
problem, opportunity, or need for your solution. Cite the sources for your research material in this
section.
2. LITERATURE REVIEW [2 to 4 pages]
Begin this section with a brief introductory paragraph explaining where you searched for source
information, what keywords you used, what you hoped to find. Explain what I will find in the upcoming
paragraphs: that is, details about the documentary sources of information you found (and probably used
for MA-4) regarding both the problem and any solution you think may be promising. The purpose of this
section is to provide context for the study within the other current work being done on the topic.

3. RESEARCH PLAN [Varies: 2 TO 5+ pages]
3.1 Research Methods
Begin this section with a brief introductory paragraph explaining where you would send students to
search for source information, what keywords you suggest, and what you think the researchers
should try to find. PLEASE READ the chapter in Moodle for an explanation of all the standard
research methods.
3.1.1 Secondary Research This is where you should write about how the team of student
researchers in the fall semester could search online and in the library materials for studies
and other related documentary information. Include search terms here you think would be
helpful.
3.1.2 Primary Research Here you should write about your ideas for conducting experiments,
observations, surveys, interviews, etc. in order to complete the project you are proposing.
3.2 Budget Considerations
This section includes your estimate of the resources, both financial and time, you think would be
required to conduct the study you are proposing. You may want to research a study of similar scope
either at Montana Tech or elsewhere to see what kind of budget may be needed. Cite your sources.
You may use one or more tables to provide estimated budget information. Be sure to caption any
illustrations according to the rules you learned in MA-3.
3.3 Project Schedule
Assuming a team of students will have 10 weeks in the Fall Semester 2018 to complete the study
you propose, provide a schedule including dates and milestones that you recommend they follow.
You may want to present this information in a Gantt chart with a sentence or two introducing it.
4. EXPERIENCE AND TEAM [up to 1 page]
4.1 Team
Describe the detail of the study team you think should conduct your study next semester. This is
intended to show me that you have thought about the details included in the Research Plan. Make
whatever assumptions about the students that will help you.
4.2 Experience
Use this section to describe your own experience with research as well as with your chosen topic. If
you were in charge of this project, what experiences do you have that would make you the best
person to lead the study? This discussion should help me assess the credibility of your proposal for a
study.
5. CONCLUSION AND REFERENCES [up to 1 page]
5.1 Conclusion
Summarize your research study proposal and the reasons I should accept your project.
5.2 References
Provide a bibliography (IEEE) of any outside sources you used to write the proposal.

REMEMBER:
This proposal is in the form of a letter, so you should write an appropriate short paragraph to end the
letter and set up a signature block:
Thank you for considering this response to your Request for Proposals. I am hopeful you agree that the
study I propose is timely, worthwhile, and a good fit for the needs of your WRIT 321 students. Please
contact me at _______________________ if you have any questions about this proposal or need
additional information. I look forward to your approval of this project.
Sincerely,
