From Alberto and Troutman, the term reinforcement, used to describe pleasant events or rewards given to a person who complies with the demands of some behavior change agent, has become part of the vocabulary of the general public. It has thus become associated with a stereotypic, manipulative view of behavior modification, conceptualized as an artificial tool created to make people engage in behaviors chosen by others. Although applied behavior analysts use the principles of reinforcement to change behavior, it is not true that they invented them. Reinforcement is a naturally occurring phenomenon. Applied behavior analysts have simply applied the effects of reinforcement in a thoughtful and systematic manner.
