From Alberto and Troutman, the term reinforcement, used to describe pleasant events or rewards given to a person who complies with the demands of some behavior change agent, has become part of the vocabulary of the general public. It has thus become associated with a stereotypic, manipulative view of behavior modification, conceptualized as an artificial tool created to make people engage in behaviors chosen by others.
