Things to focus on: In order to understand the contemporary reality of work and labour, it is necessary to examine the historical emergence of capitalism and industrialization. This lesson will provide a general introduction to these complex processes and in doing so provide the theoretical and historical foundation for the lessons that follow. In this lesson, we will explore the history of capitalism and industrialization from its beginnings in Europe and subsequent spread throughout the West. Specifically, we will focus on the development of capitalism and the history of industrialization in Canada. Special attention will be devoted to understanding the conditions under which Aboriginal people participated in the development of capitalism in Canada. We will also look at the contributions of major social theorists to the study of capitalism and industrialization will be discussed; particularly the central arguments emerging from the works of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim and Max Weber.

Things to focus on: This lesson has explored some of the notable patterns and trends in the Canadian labour market. In particular, it has focused on the labour market participation, employment and unemployment trends of key demographic groups in Canadian society. Various sociological theories and labour market models have been used to provide a greater understanding of these trends and patterns. What can be concluded from this lesson is that there have been significant changes in the patterns and trends of various groups in the Canadian labour market and these changes are a reflection of wider transformations on local, national and global levels.
