For this critical thinking assignment I want you to research the continuum, the connection between diabetes, vascular disease (atherosclerosis) and Alzheimer’s disease. You have learned about age-related, type II diabetes, now tell us in a 2 page double-spaced paper, 12 point font- – – – .
1) What is diabetes? type I versus type II?
2) How does diabetes cause atherosclerosis?
3) How are diabetes and atherosclerosis linked to Alzheimer’s disease?
4) Alzheimer’s Disease is increasingly being referred to, in a colloquial way, as type III diabetes. Find out what percentage of Alzheimer’s disease patients also suffer from diabetes. IMPORTANT: We are not looking for how many diabetics develop Alzheimer’s, but instead are looking for how what percentage of Alzheimer’s patients also have diabetes.  Think about the difference between the two statistics!  NOTE: We have modified the directions so that we are asking you to find and discuss statistics that explain the link between Alzheimer’s and diabetes – the percentage of patients or the number of patients who suffer from both.  This is a broader question, so we will accept more answers.  You can be creative here, as long as you are discussing statistics that relate to Alzheimer’s and diabetes, and how they relate in the patient populations.
5) Do you know any family members, friends, etc. who have Alzheimer’s, diabetes, or atherosclerosis?  Tell us about them and their lifestyles, diets, or exercise habits.  NOTE: If you do not know anyone personally, you can discuss a celebrity or you can discuss a hypothetical person who has one of these diseases. Please don’t just say you don’t know anyone!
INCLUDE TWO REFERENCES IN YOUR ANALYSIS……….. CITE THEM IN THE TEXT…………..LIST THEM AT THE END AS REFERENCES
WE WANT YOU TO DO INDEPENDENT RESEARCH – PLEASE DO NOT USE REFERENCES FROM THE WEEKLY READINGS FOR YOUR PAPER – YOU NEED TO FIND OTHER SOURCES.  ALSO, DO NOT USE LIVESTRONG, SINCE THE WEBSITE IS INACCURATE ON THESE ISSUES.
Now, a word of advice – do not plagiarize from other student papers or from sources on the internet.  The vast majority of you are OK, and are careful, but for those who make this mistake you are looking at a zero on the paper at best, and an F in the class and an SJACS referral at worst.
We do allow students to see the turnitin score when they submit, and then to replace the paper before the due date if the score is too high.  There is no excuse for submitting a paper with a high score.
We want to see your original work, and we want you to learn the material by putting thought and effort into these assignments.  You should not be lifting material from references without quotations, using material another student has submitted to the class, or using large amounts of quotations in your paper without original analysis.
I’m attaching some resources from USC that can help refresh your knowledge about USC’s academic integrity policies and what constitutes plagiarism.
Let us know if you have any questions.
