I have applied much of what I have learned in critical thinking to my everyday life. Many times, it is just to take a minute and try to look at a situation differently. Maybe it is to put myself in someone else’s shoes. While at work, it is to put the patient’s best interest first, but still be able to collaborate with other healthcare professionals. These three skills are the most important to use when thinking critically, “Interpreting – Understanding and explaining the meaning of information, or a particular event. Analyzing – Investigating a course of action, that is based upon data that is objective and subjective. Evaluating – This is how you assess the value of the information that you got” (Nurse Journal, 2017). Since I place central lines I need to think of the consequences a central line infection can have on a patient and reimbursement. I must think critically to what type of line is best for the patient. After discussions with other physicians and recommendations from the Association for Vascular Access, I have come up with a work-sheet that aids in the decision that is best suited for the patient. Data is gathered, interpreted, analyzed and evaluated. There is an app that was developed to help with making those decisions. “the Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters (MAGIC), which defines when it is appropriate to place a PICC vs. another vascular access device” (Improve PICC , 2018). With the use of my worksheet and the MAGIC app, I feel patients are receiving the most appropriate line for their care.
