Culminating Case Assignment (Country is Russia)
For the culminating case, you will need to integrate the information presented over the course of
the semester and apply your findings to your assigned country for the culminating case company.
Over the semester, you have done several activities that should form the bases for evaluating the
culminating case.
I. Purpose
To assimilate the numerous and varied view companies need to understand and embrace to
operate a business in a global environment.
To analysis and evaluation in-depth one country for one company to determine what global
strategy should be embraced inthat one country.
II. Activities
You will be given a case that will form the bases on your analysis and evaluation. For the Spring
2017 Semester, the case is The Hershey Company. During the course you have done many
activities that will aid you in your culminating case assignment. This will form the starting point
for the case; however, you will need to conduct additional research on the case company – The
Hershey Company’s – and their activities in your country. To do this, make use of the company’s
website, relevant periodical articles from library databases, the course libguide, other Internet
searches, class materials, etc. to assess Hershey’s activities relative to your assigned country.
Your paper should address issues related to each of the four disciplines covered in the class
in an assimilated manner (one paper, not four sections pasted together). You need to look
back at the activities you did for each of the four disciplines and utilize them along with the
following discipline guidance given below, to fully analysis Hershey in your selected
country. Your research and analysis should lead you to identify what actions Hershey
should take in your country at this point in time. That is – Should they enter the country (if
not already in the country), maintain their existing presence, expand further in your
country or withdrawal? Your stance should (1) be justified with supporting research data
as well as (2) provide recommendations on how to implement your stance.
III. Deliverables
The culminating written case report will need to be submitted per your section instructor
requirements, i.e via Moodle, in hard copy the day of the presentation, both electronic
submission and hard copy, etc. prior to the beginning of the final exam period (Wednesday, May
17, 5:50 p.m.) The paper should be one integrated professional paper, not several papers
attached together, with appropriate citations and references.
Each country will do a 10 minute presentation during the final exam period. You will be
expected to dress professionally and to use visual props as appropriate (i.e. power point, other
visuals, etc.) to deliver a professional presentation. All members of the group are expected to be
part of the presentation. Given you only have 10 minutes for the presentation, you cannot present
everything you found! You need to focus on the key points that support your decision on what
Hershey should do in your country!

Please refer to the marketing discipline activity guide sheet. You have already assessed the
country’s consumer via the marketing discipline activity. For the culminating case, you
need to use that same consumer data, only now relate it to The Hershey Company. That is
–Based on what you found regarding the consumer, what is/should be Hershey’s product
and product types, price points, distribution channel/ locations, and promotion possibilities
in that country based on your selected country’s consumer base? How will Hershey need to
proceed to generate positive consumer behavior via their marketing activities?

1. Evaluate the economic conditions of the country for the past 10 years; pay particular
attention to the most recent data. Indicators to be discussed:
a. GDP growth rate

c. Unemployment rate
How would you characterize the economic performance of the country in recent times? Is it
conducive to Hersey entering the market or expanding its presence?
2. Recognize the state of the foreign sector:
a. Identify the exchange rate regime in the country and evaluate its performance
since 2006. Collect information on recent sociopolitical or economic events that
may affect the exchange rate and discuss your findings.
b. Evaluate the performance of the balance of payments since 2006. Is the state of

key objectives in this country (e.g., expand sales vs. manufacture for export)? What types of
investments do they have in the country now (e.g., sales offices, wholly owned manufacturing
plants, joint ventures, local company acquisitions)? Evaluate the effectiveness of their strategy.
OR If Hershey has not yet entered your country’s market, recommend an entry strategy and
defend your choice. For example, are there local companies that would make good acquisition
targets, or do you think they should start operations from scratch? Should they focus on sales,
manufacturing, raw materials, or some combination of these?
2. What actions have been taken by Hershey in your country to demonstrate that it is a socially
responsible company? How would you evaluate the company’s activities from the standpoint of
social responsibility?
OR If Hershey has not yet entered your country’s market, discuss the issues they should pay the
most attention to in order to be true to their own corporate values as well as viewed as socially
responsible in that national environment.
3. Conduct research on the confectionary industry in your country. Which companies represent
the most significant competitors for Hershey in this country? Do local companies or other
foreign-based MNCs pose the greatest threat? Evaluate Hershey’s strengths and weaknesses
compared to these competitors.
