Your introduction must:
-Introduce your special topic to the reader (identify and describe the
topic and its characteristics as well as the stage of development in
focus)
-Include a topic statement describing the central aim of your paper
and provide a succinct general overview of your points.
This section is meant to introduce, define and explain your topic.
• Analysis (3 parts): Connect to Content & Theory. Critically examine this topic in relation to content and theory learned in this class.
In this section, you are also to refer to at least 2 other sources (1+ peer reviewed articles and/or 1+ other academic sources such as academic books) for each part.
Part A: Explain why this is an important topic to examine. You must explain why this is an important topic for educators and parents. You must also connect the importance of your topic to at least one additional system, individual or group (e.g., other family members, society, different cultures, ecological systems).
Be sure to draw on at least two sources to explain and justify your response.
Part B: Explain how your topic is related to child development. Specifically, explain how it is linked to different areas of a child’s life (e.g., academic success, emotional development etc.) Specify whether the effects are positive or negative for a child’s development. Be sure to draw on at least two sources to explain and justify your response.
Part C: Explain the issues or problems associated with this topic. Be sure to specify what the issues are, how an educator or parent should and would intervene and what steps can be made to prevent these issues. Be sure to draw on at least two sources to explain and justify your response.
• Conclusion:
o Summarize your main points.
o Re-iterate the importance of this topic and why, including the importance
for whom, the effects on child development and the issues associated.
– Finish with a take home message and some additional questions that may
be asked or should be asked when considering this special topic.
