The purpose of this assignment is to learn how to critique journal articles to determine sound science for evidence-based practice decisions. Research is used to make decisions concerning nursing care and protocols, and the research used in decision making must be sound. Each article used in a professional evidence-based review should be critiqued to determine suitability for inclusion in the brief. This assignment will teach students how to critically analyze information before basing a decision upon the information. Being able to critically analyze information before making a decision based on the information is an important skill that is useful in any important decision such as a healthcare decision.
Task: The student will select an article used in the evidence-based brief assignment to critique the credibility of the information and critically analyze the research for nursing implications for nursing practice. (Quantitative or Qualitative research article) The article will be critiqued according to Fain (2021) guidelines outlined in chapter 15. A critique is not a report of findings. A critique compares a research article to a standard. In this assignment, the standard is the Fain (2021) textbook. The critique is written to inform the reader about the weakness and strengths of the article compared to the standard. Simply stating, yes, the article has a title is not a critique. The critique will build reading and critical thinking skills that can be used when assessing any document. The student will also rate the level of evidence with a scale from Johns Hopkins University. The critique will include a reference list that includes the selected article and the Fain (2021) textbook. If the student uses any other sources of information, these sources must also be included in the reference list. Students will learn to apply critical analysis to many decision-making processes in life.
