A group that I will lead in the future will be a group of pregnant teenagers as I go into the field of working at a maternity home for teenage mothers. One important dyad situation in this type of group will be changing the format (Jacobs et al., 2016). In working in a maternity home, the dynamic is always changing as new residents come in and previous residents finishing our program. Changing the format will be important to incorporate in various group sessions. Secondly, warming up members and building energy will be very important (Jacobs et al., 2016). Allow members of the group to be comfortable with one another is key in order to make the maternity home the most beneficial environment for all residents. Finally, processing information and group exercises are essential in this type of group (Jacobs et al., 2016). In this type of group is it important to allow the residents time to process through things that they are going through and what they may be feeling. While they work closely with their case manager to work on their specific plan, it is important for them to be able to relate to each other through talking about what they are going through while in this program. As a leader I see my role as a combination of servant and controller. I think as a group leader it is important to have a balance of both these roles in order to be help reach your clients. You must be able to selflessly serve your group, while still having control of the group setting and the conversation if it is going off track. I used to be a leader who spoke too little in my role of a group leader, but now I think I have the tendency to speak too much in a group setting at times. I know that in order to improve my servant skills as a lead a group that I need to become a better listener when group members are speaking. I have a tendency to think of what I am going to respond with while a person is still speaking and this distracts me from listening fully to a person while they are talking.
