How does Aeneas promote the kind of Roman virtues needed at the start of the Augustan Age – both personal and collective? • Consider the value of uprightness – a man’s responsibility to place your country’s wellbeing first, and serving his community rather than just his own individual glory. • Consider the value of “gravity”.

How does Aeneas’ descent into the Underworld and ascent into the Upper World represent the rebirth of Rome, or the death of the Republic? • Refer to Week 2 on the Monomyth and the model of the Hero’s Journey. • How has Aeneas symbolically died as a Trojan and is reborn as a Roman? • Has Aeneas fully accepted his destiny at the beginning of Book VI? • Has Aeneas fully accepted his destiny at the end of Book VI?
8. How is the Aeneid used to unite Rome under one rule? • Here’s a helpful HINT: Consider the overall message of the poet and what his epic poem is communicating to Rome at the time of its creation. Virgil had a passionate conviction in the greatness of Rome. • How does this epic poem instill a sense of nationalistic pride in the Roman people? How does Book VI symbolize the destiny of Rome’s greatness and the hope that peace and joy will come from suffering. Virgil is using symbolism and metaphor to represent a national heritage and foundation. Consider the characters that the hero encounters throughout his adventure and how they are inciting the general audience of Rome (Republicans-traditionalists and Monarchists) as a call-to-action from the people. *The bullet points are ideas for you to use to develop your discussions, by no means should you try to accomplish everything listed under each number.
