Assignment
Your blind uncle has become interested in art. You escort him to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where you describe one sculpture from the Egyptian collection, the Estate Figure (Typically referred to as the “Female Figure of an Offering Bearer.”). Here is the link to its MET page:
Describe the work to him in detail, being as objective and descriptive as possible. You see, your uncles quite the stickler for detail and doesnt care for loose language, editorializing, or personal sentiments. All he wants is a rich and exacting description of what the object looks like. This is an in-person assignment i.e., you must go to the Museum to observe the object firsthand.

1. [First Paragraph] Your description should move from general to more specific characteristics. Provide the title, culture or civilization, and approximate date of the work at the very beginning of your essay. Standing far away from the object i.e., 20-25 feet, include a general description of the works size, what is represented, and the position or arrangement of the figure or forms.
2. [Main Body of Essay] Standing as close to the object as possible (without touching it), describe the physical details of the work, the shapes or forms, the angles and curves of the sculpture, how the material is modeled or painted, the medium i.e., what the work is made of, its range of colors, textures, the qualities of the surface, the carving or painted effects. Be as specific and descriptive and objective as possible.
3. [Final Paragraph] Compare the in-person experience of the object with how it looks in its online form on the Museums website. What impression does the work make virtually vs. in the flesh? What are key differences? What do you see in-person that you miss online, or vice-versa?
Guidelines
- The assignment should be approximately 2 pages in lengthdouble spaced and with normal margins and font size (i.e., 12-point).
- The description should take-up most of the assignment; the in-person vs. virtual qualities of the work should be limited to a final paragraph.
- Do not use ANY personal pronouns, i.e., no I, me, myself, etc.; nor ANY indirect personal pronounsas in One imagines the painter applying his brush to the canvas …. This is intended to be an objectively descriptive assignment, all written in the third person; e.g. The arms and legs are gently rounded, with stubby protrusions for fingers and toes.
