This week we are looking at a major phase of early modern globalization. Please compare and contrast the perspectives of the colonizers and the colonized peoples. How did globalization affect people from different geographies?
(Make sure to post once and then again in response to any student on your thread or another one by Sunday at midnight if your last name begins with A-I. If your last name begins J-Z, please make sure to post at least once in response to anyone by Sunday at midnight. Please do not wait until the last minute as I will not be able to answer questions, further dialogue, correct errors etc. The first group must make those Thursday deadlines! Also, please make sure to use citaitons in each of your posts to verify from where you are getting your historical details. All posts must have citations from lecture and/or the text to earn credit. A simple page number from the text and a reference to the specific slide numer will work).

Justin Do: Colonizers felt the belief and desire to expand their political influences and establish a tactical foothold in other parts of the world because their technology was advanced and civilized. This gave them an advantage and control of valuable commodities such as spices, metals, and raw materials. On page 13 of chapter 1 “Ottomans and Venetians controlled access to luxury goods—gold and ivory from sub-Saharan Africa and silks, gems, and spices from Asia”. With these advantages in technology, they were willing to obtain luxury goods that Africans, East, and South Asians couldn’t access. Ottomans and Venetians felt very terrorized because with the certain goods they had access to from Asia, they were afraid that invaders were going to take over their land and use them as slaves. On page 15 it states “a foundation for the conquest and colonization of the Americas and for the enslavement of millions of Africans”. With these enslavements Portuguese mariners were mapping Africa’s northwest coast raiding whoever they encountered and splitting their profits with each other.
Early modern globalization had different effects on different regions. Although it expanded trade and economy, it has also increased the gap between industrialized and developing countries. It has also caused many negatives because many diseases were spreading causing dietary shifts, and new trade relationships (lecture slide 16). Early modern globalization has brought many opportunities and disadvantages for different groups but I felt like it had a really big effect on deaths, slavery, and diseases. Diseases had a really big impact because it made it harder for groups to trade certain items or crops they needed to survive. Which ended up ruining relationships that caused war and slavery.
