In carrying out nursing research, one of the most common statistical tests used is the independent samples t-test, also known as the two-sample t-test or unpaired t-test. Independent samples t-test is applied to compare two independent groups to accentuate whether statistical evidence shows the two population groups are significantly different. Conversely, when carrying out nursing research, independent samples t-test is normally applied, particularly when you want the means to precisely compare two groups so that it is easier to determine whether two population means are different (Campbell, 2017).
Additionally, the independent samples t-test applies when comparing two distinct and independent population groups with a continuous dependent variable in nursing research. For the researcher to apply the test, the two population groups must be independent, containing different population participants; however, the test to use also, the dependent variable must be continuous (Campbell, 2017).
