I will argue that moral relativism is the best meta-ethical position. Moral relativism is the best position because it acknowledges the complexity and diversity of human values and beliefs. In a world with a wide range of cultures and traditions, it recognizes what is considered morally right or wrong. This acknowledgment promotes cultural sensitivity and respect for different moral perspectives. Furthermore, moral relativism provides a remedy for the problem of cultural imperialism. When sticking to a universal moral standard, there is a risk of imposing one culture’s values onto others, with harmful consequences. Moral relativism defends against that. Moral relativism also emphasizes the importance of individual autonomy and personal choice in ethical matters. It recognizes that individuals may hold differing moral beliefs within the same society, allowing for greater personal freedom and self-determination. This aspect of moral relativism empowers individuals to make moral decisions based on their own values and conscience. However, it is crucial to address some of the criticisms of moral relativism. One common critique is that it can lead to moral nihilism or moral chaos, as it appears to allow for any action to be morally justified if someone believes it is right. To address this moral relativism can incorporate the idea of “soft” relativism, which allows for some universally agreed-upon moral principles or human rights as a foundation for ethical discussions.
