If you read Brecht’s play, is Mother Courage a heroic figure, a tragic figure, a sympathetic figure, or an offensive figure? How does she compare to some of the other figures and characters we have encountered thus far? And, to put it somewhat crudely, what does her story suggest about the relationship between the realm of the oikos and the realm of the polis: what does her family and her cart (her business) represent in relation to the military battles being fought all around her?
