Introductory Econometrics, 2018 Coursework Brief
Assignment:
Economic theory suggests that a person’s hourly earnings are related to their schooling level and
their experience in the labour market. In addition, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that gender
matters.
This coursework requires you to estimate the following three regression models,
Model 1:
Model 2:
Model 3:
where denotes hourly earnings, denotes years of schooling, denotes years in the
labour market, and is a dummy variable that takes the value if the respondent identifies
as female, and otherwise.
The coursework has a maximum length of 1,200 words, and should be split into the following
sections:
1. Introduction (200 words)
2. Models (400 words)
3. Results (400 words)
4. Discussion (200 words)
In the Results section you should present the estimation results of the three models in a table,
including point estimates, t-test results, R2
values. You should also interpret
the point estimates in the three models, and consider whether or not they are in agreement with
economic theory. Finally, you should present results from the White test for heteroskedasticity for
each model in a separate table. In the Discussion section you should state which model you consider
to be the superior model, and why. You might also discuss how you would improve the models in
further work.
In addition to the above, you are also required to include an appendix in which your Stata output is
copied and pasted. Note that the appendix does not count towards the word count, and the tables
in the main body of the text do not count towards the word count.
