The primary focus of the Issues Paper is to analyze the relationship between law and business.
You will identify a topic that you find interesting then research and analyze it from a legal perspective.  You will need to identify at least one specific law that relates to your legal topic, preferably two if you are able to do so.  These could be federal, state, local, or administrative laws, either in existence or currently proposed, that deal with to your topic.  You will also identify and explain a legal case that pertains to the law itself or the issue related to the law.  This may also be a federal, state, or administrative case.  You do not need my permission for a legal topic but are free to discuss it with me.
Once you have chosen a topic and corresponding law(s) that interests you, you will be required to conduct research into each law’s background.  This would include investigating and discussing such factors as the historical and political forces responsible for producing the law as well as the underlying policy reasons that justified its creation.  You will also explain if there is any pending litigation or legislative action pertaining to your topic.  You will summarize and explain the legal case and any effects it has had on the issue. The URI Library and its website is an excellent source for retrieving this information: web.uri.edu/library/.
Next you will conduct a business analysis of your law.  To accomplish this, you should thoroughly explain what type of business you wish to apply the laws to (public, private, nonprofit), the entire industry, or even a specific company if you wish.  You will then analyze the law by its effects on the three primary stakeholders of that company or industry: management/ownership, employees, and customers.  Please note that some of these laws are quite broad and you may need to narrow your business analysis to a part of the law rather than its whole.
The last part will be a discussion piece as to your opinion on the laws and how they are either a help or a hindrance to your chosen business.  The paper must be footnoted (any style is acceptable as long as there is enough information for me to retrieve your source) with a bibliography.  The more you footnote the better, and always give credit when you quote material.  Footnotes are not required for your opinions, unless you base them on the ideas of another.  Spelling, grammar, and logical sentence and idea flow are required.
The paper should be 12 pages minimum not including the bibliography, typed, page numbered, 12 point Times New Roman font, double-spaced with one-inch margins.  No additional spaces permitted between paragraphs. A separate cover page is required, which means you DO NOT restate your name, the class, the date, etc. on the first page of your document.  You may use graphs and charts so long as they do not cover more than 1/3 of a page, are relevant to the paper and are properly cited, and you may have no more than 1 graph/chart per 7 pages.  For additional assistance you may contact the URI Writing Center: web.uri/edu/aec/writing.
