A précis (pronounced pray-see) is a type of summary of a particular text or speech.  It is a helpful tool to keep you on track with your reading and to have a record of the main points of each reading.  A well-written précis is short (i.e., 5-8 sentences) and should include the following:
•    A single coherent sentence giving the following:
o    Name of the author, title of the work, and date in parenthesis;
o    A rhetorically accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “deny,” “refute,” “prove,” “disprove,” “explain,” etc.);
o    A “that “clause containing the major claim (thesis statement) of the work.
•    1-2 sentences giving an explanation of how the author develops and supports the major claim (thesis statement). This should include mention of the methods and materials used by the author to assert their argument.
•    A single coherent sentence giving a statement of the author’s purpose, followed by an “in order” phrase.
•    1-2 sentences giving a description of the authors’ main findings and their implications.
An effective précis outlines the following:
1.    This is what was studied (argued, discussed, asserted)
2.    This is how it was done (the specific methods, data, and analysis used by the author)
3.    This is what was learned (the central findings from the author’s analysis)
