You are at the final stage of the research process. You have established your research question, you have explored possible topics, and now it is time to make your statement using the information you have found. This paper is intended to be the culmination of this class, so take this as a chance to show me what you have learned.
Paper Prompt:
Essay Part 3 will consist of a medium length paper (1650-2000 words) in which you will present your thesis statement: clearly stating what your paper is about, the question that has driven your research, and the answers you have found. The body of the paper will consist of your description of the cultural practice, people, or situation you’ve investigated. In addition to the information relating to your question, you’ll also provide an analysis and state the answer you’ve found. Within these paragraphs, you’ll cite all relevant information you have found from your sources. This will support your claims with the scholarly works that inform your analysis. Along with the journal articles you’ve already analyzed, you can use any other supporting sources to provide necessary details. Additionally, within the body paragraphs, you will need to show your newly acquired anthropological understanding by including at least two sources from class readings that help your work. These sources may be very direct (ex. “In the same way, Weiner’s study of yams highlights the political nature of marriage.”). Or they may be taking a key term or general idea from a reading that provides support (Ex. “I use Cronk’s definition of reciprocity”). For the conclusion, summarize the findings of your work and consider where your research would go from this point if it were to continue. After the conclusion, you will create a works cited for all sources you have used. The works cited page does not count towards the word limit of the essay.
In-text citations:
As with essay part 2, you will need to properly attribute outside information to its proper sources. To do this, you will use in-text citations for quotes and paraphrased information. Remember: failure to properly cite is a form of plagiarism and academic dishonesty.
Ex. The authors claim that one cause of obesity in the United States is government-funded farm subsidies (Franck et al. 327).
Ex. Human beings have been described as “symbol-using animals” (Burke 3).
Objectives:
When you have completed this essay, you should have a paper that you can feel proud of. You have done amazing work in this course and grown immensely in your own knowledge. Along with demonstrating your skill as a scholar of anthropology, it is also a project of your own interests and curiosity.
Evaluation:
I will be evaluating you on the quality of your research paper. Have you asked and answered a question? Have you provided sufficient detail about the culture, people, or practice that the reader can understand the nature of the question? Is there enough information that you can support the claims you are making, namely your analysis? Is the paper properly edited for grammar, style, and clarity? In short, you must: 1) Address all parts of the essay prompt, 2) properly cite your sources, and 3) present a polished work free of spelling errors, typos, and grammatical mistakes within the specified word limit of 1650-2000 words.
