Learning Outcome: Discuss and write how the Christian faith and other religions impact our understanding of art history.
Thus far, we have analyzed art on many levels, from the elements and principles to a work’s medium and historical context. We have considered how artworks can affect us on a cognitive level and even at times on an emotional level. A great work of art may also have the power to move us spiritually and bring us to a place of awe in the same way that perhaps the majesty of the mountains, a deep connection to a loved one or a powerful piece of music can.
Before you begin, read this reflection on art and the Sacred. from a Christian perspective by David Steindl-Rast who has some surprising things to say about Picasso’s Guernica.
For this assignment, you will:
Respond to at least one of the ideas that Steindl-Rast addresses in his reflection. How does this idea resonate with you?
Identify a work (provide a link or the actual image and basic info) of art that brings you to a place of awe. The work itself need not (but certainly can) have a religious theme.
Then, answer the following questions:
What about this work instills a sense of awe in me?
How is this work a reflection of the wonder and majesty of our God?
What can I take away from this viewing experience?
Next, imagine that you are an architect commissioned to design a place of worship inspired by this work of art. What characteristics does this artwork possess that you would want to translate into your place of worship? Explain your design plans in detail (include elements and principles of art) and be sure to address how your design will enhance the worship experience. You may also (optional) include other details such as the kind of music that the artwork would inspire and provide links and examples.
You may present your design in one of the following ways:
Write a descriptive letter to the future minister of the place of worship.
Create a drawing or design you’ve created on the web.
Expectation:
You are expected to write a 2 page essay where you answer, discuss, and explore the prompts above. For the sake of this assignment, you need not include a formal bibliography, however if you use outside sources please be sure to cite them.
The second part of your assignment will include a detailed explanation of how you would incorporate your image into the design of a commissioned place of worship. As is stated above, this portion of the assignment allows for a personal touch and you are at liberty to use your imagination to satisfy this aspect of the assignment.
