This is for a Microeconomics sustainability class.
The project will be specific to an evaluation of a product or process of the disposable pens, where the evaluation will be specific to sustainability of this format:
Process Map: Detail the elements of the process you will be evaluating. For example, if it is a vending machine, know the vendor, how often it is serviced, the use per metric you are using (day/month), the average revenue generated per metric, extrapolated energy impact, extrapolated waste impact from vended items, extrapolated nutrition impact. You will not be able to track the entirety of the life of the machine but you can make reference in your map to pre and post use and provide a high level environmental and resource footprint.
Lifecycle: Using your process map you can provide a lifecycle related to your specific project and label elements to parallel the entries in your process map
Holistic cost to benefit assessment: At this stage, you will start the evaluation process. You will have to first determine the time horizon for your assessment. Since you are looking at the lifecycle this will include the waste life. Here you will have to proxy costs and keep a record of market costs too. Market costs will be your comparison to what you will assess and determine based on the qualitative/quantitative assessment of externalities and underpricing of resources.
Market cost: Articulate what is included in market costs and state the market price paid.
Comparison of holistic and market costs: Here you will provide a cost to benefit analysis making a case for sustainability evaluation in decision-making and justifying on the basis of economic costs (this means that you will assess externalities for their feedback to human health). You are welcome to use other approaches as well but the economic connection to human health will arguably be a strong argument to most individuals.
Action items
Argument for long term efficiency
Argument for alignment with university mission or commitment to sustainability
Recommendations
Each project is expected to involve economic analysis related to the sustainability of topic. For example, are electric cars sustainable when including the impact of electric production and after-life? Why or why not? Here an evaluation of externalities and product inputs should be made and anĀ evaluation of consumer information asymmetry specific to the market price should at minimum be discussed.
