Midnight in Central City by Vance Kirkland, ca. 1930. Some say that Vance Kirkland, a faculty member at the University of Denver, was/is Colorado’s most important painter. Maybe. But this is his most famous painting in modernist, post-impressionist style. The minerals industry drove all aspects of Colorado’s economy from the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of the late 1850s to the collapse of that traditional industry in the 1920s when Colorado entered a two-decade time of transition with its complex modern economy emerging with World War II in the 1940s. Interestingly, the traditional mining industry attracted little artistic attention until it collapsed in the interwar years, the time of Kirkland’s work. Courtesy Kirkland Museum.
