Modern Political Philosophy and the U.S. Government
Thus far in the course we have covered three political philosophers: Niccolo Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, and John Locke. Describe in some detail some of the ways in which their ideas are reflected in the U.S. government? Then similar to Hobbes I want you to utilize deductive reasoning, philosophy of the whole, and social contract theory to justify your own form of government. [This will require deep thought on your part; in other words you will be creating your own political philosophy].
In writing your answer, please follow these directions:
1. Your answer should be based on the concepts we have discussed in class (and what you have read in the textbook). When your argument makes use ofconcepts you have learned in the course, assume the reader is NOT familiar with these ideas. In other words, explain your argument from basic principles, define key terms, and show how they are related to one another, if necessary.
2. Your answer should be between 4 and 6 pages in length – no longer than 6 pages. The paper must be typed and should be double spaced with standard 1 inch margins and 12 font size. Please be sure to number your pages. Place your name, course number in the top corner of the first page. Use whatever format style you feel most comfortable.
3. Your writing does count for your grade.
4. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE! If you draw specifically from sources such as the course readings, the www…, these sources must be cited. You do not need to cite ideas from the lecture that gave a general understanding of the ideas you use. Please also make use of these textbook and other resources Required Text (s)
