Motor Skills/Floppy Infant Observation (30 points)
In motor observations we are looking for when and how the child moves with gravity or against gravity. When you go examine a baby, the first action is to observe the infant at rest, note and document the position of the arms and legs. Then you call their attention with sounds or a toy (auditory or visual) and observe their response. Then pick up the baby or observe someone picking up the baby. All infant, toddlers and children motor observations are done with them wearing only their diaper. Clothes and shoes may restrict movements and hide abnormal postures.
In this assignment you will prepare documents that will assist you when writing up motor observations. You will prepare three documents that you must submit together one after the other.
Baby Milestones Motor Development
Fine Motor Skills Birth to 36 months
Motor Behavior Descriptions
Step1. For Document #1 Titled Baby Milestones Motor Development:
Watch the Baby Milestones Motor Development https://youtu.be/68ifH6kmHJ4 and write up a list of motor milestones to look for by age birth to 24 months.
Step #2: For Document #2 Titled Fine Motor Skills Birth to 36 months :
Watch the Fine Motor Development video https://youtu.be/LiTuGv_GeaEand write up a list of Fine Motor Skills Development from birth to 36 months.
Step #3 For Document #3 Titled Motor Behavior Descriptions:
Go to https://embryology.med.unsw.edu.au/embryology/index.php/Neural_Exam_Movies#Newborn . This site has videos of normal/typical and abnormal/atypical development as observed by PD Larsen and SS Stensaas, Utah School of Medicine. While these videos were made to teach how to do very detailed examinations, that’s not the intention of this assignment. The intention is for you to see and recognize the key characteristics of “normal “ and “floppy/low tone”.
