Directions: Read the pages in the Voices from the Harlem Renaissance, listen to the lectures, and view the videos.
Write an essay focusing on the music, such as Ragtime, Blues of Memphis, Spirituals, Folk, musicians and the visual artists, such as Augusta Savage, Aaron Douglas, Richmond Barth, Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller, Lois Mailou Jones, Romare Bearden, James Van Der Zee, Archibald Motley, etc. The final measure of the greatness of all peoples is the amount and standard of the literature and art they have produced.
Select at least one of the examples in music and at least two of the visual artists and explain the reasons for their uniqueness. Describe the characteristics and significance in representing the greatness produced by the Black musician or artist. This essay should be at least one and one-half pages.
