MY GARDEN STATE PROJECT
Two important outcomes of this course are that
Each student identifies at least one environmental issue of personal importance to them.
Each student understands the effects of thinking globally and acting locally to help remediate environmental problems.
Accordingly, this assignment asks you to do three things. First, identify an environmental issue of personal importance to you and explain why you have chosen this issue. Second, find organizations that are working to resolve or remediate the issue here in New Jersey, your own home state, or country, and investigate what they are doing about that issue. Third, explain what you and others can do to take action in resolving or remediating the issue.Your assignment presentation, (PowerPoint or Word Document) will be comprised of three parts:
Part 1 “The What” – Identify the issue of concern to you, explain its national or global impact, tell us how you became aware of this issue and how it affects your life and your community, and the larger world.
Part 2 “The Who” – Identify three organizations that are working to resolve or remediate the issue you have selected. Summarize the work that they do, their organization’s size and reach, the length of time they have been advocating for your cause, and evaluate how successful they have been.
Part 3 “Now What” – Now that you have explained the issue and identified the organizations that are working on it and their relative success, what is it that you can do at the personal and local level to remediate the issue. Finally, what do you believe each of us can do to help your cause?
Format
You can present your findings in either a 15 content slide PowerPoint presentation (not counting the title slide and references slides) or a minimum 3 page double spaced paper. You must include a Works Cited page or slide at the end of your presentation or paper.
Getting Started – We call this assignment the “Garden State” project because the Garden State is where our home is. But if you consider home to be outside the Garden State, please feel free to tailor your project to issues that concern your home environment wherever that may be.
