Org Chart Creation

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is for you to identify and demonstrate the purpose, components, and rationale of an organizational chart for a small construction company (under 30 million in annual sales). Please note that this assignment has TWO Parts, so you will submit two files: 1) your org chart with 12 positions included 2) your justification paragraphs for 4 positions.

Instructions

Step #1- Create your organizational chart:

  • Finish the research you began in Module 01 via the .
    • Identify actual positions within building construction companies associated with each of the six building construction company management functions:
      1. Executive
      2. Administrative
      3. Accounting
      4. Marketing
      5. Estimating & Sales
      6. Construction
      7. Read each job description and note key responsibilities.

Do additional online research seeking out actual construction company organizational charts.

    • Compare and contrast the functional areas, levels, and positions.
    • Consider the purpose of an organizational chart while researching.
  • Using the software of your choice, build your own basic organizational chart for a small construction company.
    • Be sure to organize the chart on a functional basis (i.e. based on functional areas/departments).
    • Use job titles common for building construction.
    • Include at least (12) positions.
    • You can model the chart on a former or current employer, or get creative and dream up your own future construction company.
    • Ensure that your chart is clean, evenly spaced, and easy for anyone to pick-up and understand.

Step #2- Write your position justification statements:

  • In practice no positions should be filled without a well developed justification statement.
  • Looking at your completed organizational chart, choose four positions to justify.
  • Using word processing software of your choice start and save a new file titled “M02 Position Justifications.”
  • Answer the following questions about each of the four positions you have chosen:
    • What makes the position critical?
    • What impact will be felt if the position is not filled?
    • Will the position generate enough revenue (directly or indirectly) to justify the expense?
      • Reference the for additional ideas.
  • If you are thoroughly justifying each position you should have a full paragraph (at least 5 sentences) per position, for a grand total of 4 paragraphs.

Grading

Your Org Chart grade will include the following considerations:

  • Submit a clean and well organized computer generated org chart.
  • The org chart must have a minimum (12) positions with correct spelling and usage of terms.
  • Write a 1-paragraph justification for each of four positions (4 paragraphs total.)
  • Use complete sentences and proper grammar.

Submitting your Assignment

  1. Find the “Choose a submission type” section at the bottom of this assignment page (if this section is not displayed, the submission type has been chosen for you). Choose your submission type from the options listed there.
  2. Complete the assignment for the chosen Submission Type.
  3. Click the Submit Assignment button to submit.
