Extra Credit Assignment
Students are to utilize this assignment to demonstrate their understanding of the material covered in
Organic Chemistry 2. This assignment will replace the lowest homework grade.
A recent (2015 onward) article from a journal applicable to your major or an ACS journal
(pubs.acs.org can be accessed through your library login) of interest will be chosen as a basis for the
assignment. From the article students are to:
1) Identify the pertinent organic chemistry or potential thereof. Examples: If your article is about a
biologically active molecule identify and explain applicable reaction(s) learned this semester. If
your article is about a material, cosmetic or food ingredient propose how the molecule could be
prepared based on your knowledge of organic chemistry techniques. Include as much
information as possible using notes, slides and the book as references. Also include
mechanisms (known or proposed).
2) Explain how the published chemistry has real world use or potential applications.
Cover page: Title of the journal article, student’s name, and date
Abstract: Include what journal the article is from, authors and their affiliations and what was the
purpose of the work
Body (much like a lab report):
➢ Introduction – identify the reaction(s)
➢ Discussion – Explain detail about the reaction(s) including mechanisms
➢ Results – what were the results of the reaction(s)
➢ Conclusion – Explain how the results relate to an potential use and/or application
