Overview:
At the conclusion of Unit 1, you will narrate an experience that in some way changed your
perspective or attitude about something or someone. You will:
1.) Relate your story as a narrative. That is, a coherent story with rise and fall of action – not
an ‘and then’ chronology.
2.) Vividly describe the events, using carefully-selected verbs, as well as appropriately chosen
adverbs to, in effect, recreate the experience for your reader.
3.) Use the ‘show, don’t tell’ technique that we discuss in class to place the reader in your
position – to allow them to understand how the experience seemed and felt to you at the
time.
4.) Convey the way(s) that the experience changed your perspective – your old and new
positions – without resorting to closed-form explaining, or telling.
