PGMT 5872 Individual Assignment Question: How would you lead a diverse and inclusive multi-cultural team

PGMT 5872 Individual Assignment Question: How would you lead a diverse and inclusive multi-cultural team? What do you need to know about the people in that team to help create a high-performance team? Consider about race, cultural values, gender, thinking styles.
Interview 5+ students or work colleagues from different racial cultures, including one person from your own specific culture. Make your selection as diverse as possible.
Sample question protocol: • My name is …………….I am studying a subject called People and Leadership. I am researching teamwork. Would you be willing to answer a couple of questions about teamwork at this university (or in the workplace)? It will take about 5 minutes. • Would be willing for me to video the conversation? The video will be discarded immediately the assignment has been assessed. It will not be uploaded to social media. Only the assessor and I will see the video. If the answer is no, ask the following question: • Would you be willing for me to audio record the conversation? The audio recording will be discarded immediately the assignment has been assessed. Only the assessor and I will listen to the recording. If the answer is still no, thank the person and choose another person. Once you have agreement on one or other of the above ask, for example: • What benefits have your found when working with students/colleagues from other cultures? • What challenges have found when working with students/colleagues from other cultures? • How did you address those issues?
Hints: Use open questions which invite more detailed responses rather than closed questions which invite yes/no answers. If the interviewee starts to talk generally about team issues, try to steer them back to the topic by reminding them that this topic is about working in teams with people from different cultures.
Mandatory – at least 5 conversations with interviewees (including a person from your own culture). You can include additional email conversations. However, if using additional emailed questions, avoid questions that allow yes/no answers or require a simple ranking (such as a Likert scale, 1-7).
Submission requirements: • Include the video or audio recordings of your conversations with your assignment submission, and additional emails (if using). • Answer the assignment question (above) using the primary evidence gained from your interviews and informed by information obtained from the academic literature.
Suggested approach: • Summarise, collate and compare the information from the conversations. A table is useful for this task However include tables as Appendices, rather than in the main discussion. • Generally, avoid bullet points and tables in your discussion. • Discuss the key points raised in your conversations using the academic literature (team/group dynamics and cultural differences) to inform your discussion (help you to explain why something occurred and whether this observation, or response from the student, is typical or atypical.) • Highlight and discuss any differences you might find between your primary sources of evidence (what you have recorded in your interviews) and what the literature says. • Draw conclusions based on your primary evidence and what the literature says. • You may conduct the interviews in groups of two or three (2-3) but you must nominate all names of the interviewers (students in your group) in your submission. This is because some students might find it overwhelming to be interviewed by a large group and might be less forthcoming with their experiences
