Instructions You will find below (on Page 2 and following) 4 examples of arguments. This assignment asks you to draw on Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 8 of the course textbook to evaluate those arguments.
For Example A: 1) Following the method and format for diagraming arguments set out in Chapter 3 of the textbook, a. Write out and number the premises and conclusion; b. Write out and number any missing premises; c. Diagram the argument. 2) Respecting the Principle of Charity and drawing on any (and only) relevant material from Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 8 of the course textbook: a. Identify, using any appropriate terminology from the course textbook, any logical weaknesses in the argument. b. Provide an argument of your own that supports your claim(s) regarding the reason(s) for regarding the argument as weak or, if you believe it is cogent or sound, why it is so. c. In showing that the argument is weak – if it is – explain clearly what it would take to make the argument strong or cogent. If you believe the argument is cogent or strong, provide a short explanation that shows why it is so. d. This should take 200-300 words and be in essay format.
For examples B, C, and D you should do only Step 2 – that is: Respecting the Principle of Charity and drawing on any (and only) relevant material from Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 8 of the course textbook: a. Identify, using any appropriate terminology from the course textbook, any logical weaknesses in the argument. b. Provide an argument of your own that supports your claim(s) regarding the reason(s) for regarding the argument as weak or, if you believe it is cogent or sound, why it is so. c. In showing that the argument is weak – if it is – explain clearly what it would take make the argument strong or cogent. If you believe the argument is cogent or strong, provide a short explanation that shows why it is so. d. The discussion of each example should take 300-400 words and should be in essay format. In total, your written answers – that is, everything excluding 1) for Example A – should be no more than 1600 words long.
Assignment Format It is expected that students will use only the relevant material from the source from which the argument is taken and the course text. (That is, students should use only the examples below and, if it is relevant, anything in the source newspapers they are taken from that are referred to in the examples. The RU Library has access to the Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star online.) Your answers should be submitted to the D2L dropbox as a Word Document. The diagram of Example A can be a scanned and turned in as an Adobe *.pdf file to the separate dropbox, if you wish to draw it by hand.
All referencing to material in the assignment must conform to MLA format, including quotations from the course text. All material must be referenced with citations that include page numbers for all printed material
