Group 1 topics:
1-A) Microbiology is essential for a career in nursing and allied health. In the lecture, we learned about the importance of identifying microbes and subsequent steps in managing infections. Describe a method we learned in class to identify microbes (eg. Kock’s postulate, pure cultures, media, etc.) and a method used to enumerate microbes (eg. serology, dilutions, instruments) to determine the efficacy of treatments.
1-B) Microorganisms are ubiquitous and diverse. They have different characteristics that place them in different taxonomic groups. An understanding of these groups supports infection management and informs the patient care plan. Describe the similarities (eg. chemical compositions) and differences (cellular structures) among the different microorganisms (eg. prokaryotes vs. eukaryotes) we covered in class.
1-C) The molecule oxygen is vital to life for my living organisms, especially for aerobic microbes. Describe the importance of the oxygen molecule as well as its dangers.
Group 2 topics:
2-A) Understanding the host immune responses in essential in the treatment and care of patients. Pick a pathogen (virus or bacteria) and describe the host immune responses that take place during the initial infection and all to way to the clearance of the pathogen from the host. Include both the innate and adaptive immune responses and the immune molecules and cells that are involved.
Describe what are PAMPs.
Describe what happens to an innate immune cell that encounters the pathogen.
Describe what happens to an adaptive immune cell in response to the pathogen.
2-B) Understanding gene regulation in bacteria helped in the development of cloning. One important aspect of the cloning vector is the ability to control the expression of the gene of interest in the expression vector. Please describe a type of promoter / gene regulation that can be incorporated in the cloning vector to express the gene of interest that is cloned into the MCS (hint: think of the lac operon, the trp operon, and the arabinose operon).
