Part I
Hello everyone! My name is Brad and I live in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. I am married with three children who range from 5 years old to 16 years old. My children have tuned me into a full-time shuttle service. I have a bachelor’s in environmental health and safety. I am currently working on my master’s in occupational safety and health. My past has primarily been in the construction industry. I have spent twenty years in construction safety. My background was working on large bridges and dams. I could be sent anywhere on the east coast at any given time depending on project stages and or incidents. It seemed like I never had enough family time. I decided five years ago it was time for a change, I wanted to be more involved with the family. I now work for a local government agency. I am the regional fire/safety administrator. I cover the central region that has thirteen electrical generation facilities, and multiple line crews. We currently have 185 employees in this region. The best part about my job is that I am able to spend the evenings with my family. I can attend sports and school functions. I have also spent the last 16 years teaching at a local vocational school that prepares young kids to go into the workforce. Every quarter I complete an OSHA 30, Flagger, Defensive Driving, and First Aid/CPR/AED with the students. I enjoy the teaching/coaching side of my job much more. So, as you can see my schedule is full.

COVID had a large impact on our training and daily work routines in our organization. Due to the nature of the work, we couldn’t shut down. We have a lot of customers that depend on our electricity. We sequestered at our facilities with a mixture of the different union craft employees. We bought campers and employees went on 30-day cycles, not leaving the secured facilities. These cycles went on for four months. At that time, we went to essentials employees only with daily testing. Everything was put on hold, including training. Durning COVID all craft employees were issued cellphones for communications/training. We utilized these devices to keep employees current with training. “86% of organizations classroom skills training had moved to an online platform” (Simpliearn, 2023). Online learning has become the new training platform for us. For a period of time, we went 100% to Microsoft teams. Even currently use a mixed platform of in-person and teams training, as well as prerecorded trainings. This was a learning curve for us, I’m sure as for everyone. This was a large lift for many employees who were trying to manage this style of training, along with managing kids who were also utilizing online platforms for learning at home.
We are back today to a new norm. The new norm definitely now includes online computer-based platforms. The mixture of these platforms has helped us to meet our regulatory requirements as well as in person training.
