After watching the video, I found one of the most interesting facts to be that glycogen is stored in our liver and if we go a day without replenishing it it will be depleted within that time. I was also aware that glycogen is the way we store our carbohydrate energy and it’s stored in our muscles.
In regards to food and glycogen, my question is what types of foods are best for storing glycogen or carbohydrate energy but is low in fat (lipids) and is best for physical activities like running a marathon. Eating Rice, pasta, lean meat and starchy vegetables 2 to 3 days before a marathon will provide the best source of energy.
Through my research I found that “ carb loading“ before a race is the best way to store glycogen energy. According to Sanford health “Carb loading is the traditional practice of runners focusing on eating carbohydrates in the days leading up to their race to optimize their glycogen stores.” (Sanford Health. 2021). Sanford health also goes on to explain that carb loading before a race is essential in providing energy to the body throughout the physical activity. This article supports my hypothesis in the carb loading before a race provides essential energy.
