The most interesting thing that I learned from the video was that we store glycogen for energy, but only very temporarily as we will have depleted our glycogen levels to almost nothing if we have not eaten all day. This made me curious about what we take away from our foods, and more specifically which foods contribute the most to muscle growth. It amazes me that I have never looked into this before, as it would do nothing but benefit my own muscle growth to learn it. So, what types of food contribute the most to muscle growth? Protein rich foods such as eggs, beef, chicken, and beans contribute the most to muscle growth.
My search results provided relatively the same answers but only one provided a numbered list. Considering I pulled 4 different protein rich foods off the top of my head, I wanted to have at least 4 examples and in order if possible. Some recurring examples were eggs, chicken, and beef. Eggs are beneficial because they contain leucine, which is an amino acid that is important to muscle growth. (Tinsley, G. 2018) Chicken is a phenomenal source of protein, containing around 26 grams of protein per 3 ounce serving. (Tinsley, G. 2018) Much to my surprise though, it takes more than just protein to “get them gains.” There is a chain of foods, all holding hands in conjunction with each other to supply my body with not only the protein to build muscle but also the energy to exercise in the first place. Carbohydrates can come from legumes, starchy vegetables, and even sweet potatoes if you can stomach that kind of thing. (Leal, D. 2020) So, while protein rich foods such as eggs and chicken can contribute to muscle growth, carbohydrates such as beans and taters can contribute just as much in the form of energy.
