Five environmental factors that can cause disease in humans include the following: mercury, radiation, lead, pesticides and industrial chemicals, and asbestos. Mercury causes neurological damage especially in workers and can arise from the release of coal-burning power plants which in turn leads to air pollution, water pollution, and contamination of fish. Because of this, simply breathing in contaminated air or drinking and eating contaminated water and food can result in disease. Another agent is radiation, in which you can get skin cancer and melanoma. Exposure of radiation can come from being out in the sun and getting X-rays. Being exposed to small amounts of radiation over a long period of time can increase risks of getting cancer. Lead, another factor, is dangerous to the brain and nervous system especially for kids. Drinking contaminated drinking water by lead pipes and breathing in lead-contaminated dust in older buildings can lead to disease. The fourth agent, pesticides and industrial chemicals, can also cause disease by eating contaminated fish or by inhalation when working near airborne mists or vapors. Lastly, diseases from asbestos is caused by breathing in or ingesting fibrous dust that eventually scars lungs. This often occurs during work or home renovations.
