PROFESSOR INSTRUCTIONS: Read “The Enlightenment of Hui Neng” in Bercholz & Kohn and Hakuin’s “Autobiography” and “The Dynamic Practice of Zen” in [D2L Course Texts]. Hui Neng lived in China from 638 to 713, while Hakuin lived in Japan from 1686 to 1789, about a thousand and fifty years later! Yet we find similarities or at least points of contact between the two “Zen biographies.” Describe some of these similarities or points of contact, as well as some differences you see, especially in terms of some of the key themes of Chan/Zen you have learned. Remember to use specific citations.
FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS: Use “The Buddhist Tradition” pdf to read “Autobiography” (pdf pages 2-9) and also read “The Dynamic Practice of Zen” (pdf pages 9-14) (don’t need to read “Zen and the Arts”). Then, I attached a screen recording of the textbook pages to read. I was not able to share the book so I recorded the pages. Please pause on the pages to read or when citing sources.
IMPORTANT: Response must have at least 5 IN-TEXT citations. If they are from the reading they would be like this for example: (Autobiography, 4) or (The Dynamic Practice of Zen, 9). If it is from the screen recording of the textbook it will be like this for example: (Bercholz & Kohn, 522). For the screenrecording, the page numbers are right under each part of the text. Use those. 5 citations are required.
