JR is a 41 yo Caucasian female with a 6 year history of GI distress which includes irregular bowel movements. She may have 4-5 loose BM’s per day and at other times, she may have 1 BM every 3-4 days. Her stools may be soft and liquidy with some mucus or they can be hard, dry and difficult to pass. She has abdominal discomfort and bloating which is relieved with a BM. She has never noticed any blood.

In addition to her GI complaints, JR also complains of intermittent joint pain of her hands and wrists. She has occasional finger joint swelling with redness. A recent evaluation by her primary care physician revealed a mild anemia, a Rheumatoid Factor test that was minimally positive, and a Lupus profile that was also minimally positive. Her primary physician opted not to treat her at this time and suggested she repeat her Rheumatoid and Lupus blood tests in 6 months.

JR comes to you for recommendations for a healthy diet that might reduce her symptoms.
