In order to fully benefit from this course, you will need to follow various sources of mass media – news media, social media outlets, music, television, film, print, etc. – and provide analysis of what you observe. With each chapter, you must find something relating to the subject of the module and write up a summary of it follow the criteria below.
Media Journal Criteria
Your media journal can include any source of mass media: print, music, social media, news media, television, film, Internet, or video games, but it must relate or connect with the subject of the chapter, which this week is radio and movies.
• It should include a CURRENT media posting, event, release, etc. (within one month of post date) and must include a direct link to the source.
• Your summary of the article, blog, event, song you are posting about should also answer the following 6 key questions for media analysis:
Authorship – Who created the message?
Format – Where was it published/disseminated and is it an effective vehicle for this topic?
Relevance – What is the relevance of this in relation to the mass media today?
Content – What lifestyles, values, and points of view are represented in or omitted from this message?
Purpose – Why is the message being sent? (Who stands to profit?)
Impact – What is the impact for the public, consumer, corporation or industry of this message?
