Class,
The Tylenol crisis was the largest medicine recall in history a total of seven people that died due to the contamination of the Tylenol from cyanide. If I were aware of the Tylenol recall as a consumer, I would want the firm to confirm that all Tylenol has been contaminated through major news outlets our over the world and I would want to place the story on a constant loop. Once I’ve seen the loop a few times I would make sure I discard all Tylenol product within my home. Prior to 1982 there was no concern about medicine being contaminated with a foreign substance. Furthermore, this type of recall would make me question all medicine that I have in the medicine cabinet. Additionally, I would contact my family, friends, associates, co-workers, and more to ensure they discard of all medicine by showing them the article about the Tylenol recall.
From a different perspective as a Human Resources manager, I would work with the firms’ top leaders to build a plan of action within the firm to ensure that all employees are safe first and then offer all employees all of their legal rights as employees of Tylenol. I would reassure all employees that a recall of all Tylenol has been initiated and that their employment with Tylenol is secure. Also, I would work with investigators to have all employees screened to ensure no one in the firm was directly or indirectly involved with the contamination of the medicine. Moving on to an engineer’s perspective I would ensure that all Tylenol manufacturers are involved with the recall of all medicines across the world. I would have all firms that manufacture Tylenol start from the being with a new batch of medicine create in 1982 and beyond. I would ensure that all Tylenol that was created before 1982 would be tested and then discarded. With that said, marketing would be the hardest process to manage. With 32 million bottles of Tylenol being recalled that would place a doubt into a consumer’s minds if Tylenol was safe and also are other medicines safe as well. I would market a campaign to show consumers that all Tylenol has been pulled from the shelves and a new lot is being tested and shipped to all stores worldwide. I would advertise which lot needs to be discarded and which lots have been tested and safe. As the government got involved and mandated the foil protection on all medicine bottles, within the marketing section I would ensure that all consumers know that Tylenol is following all government policies to ensure that all of our medicine is being tested, packaged, and seal with the foil protection before leaving the manufacturers. Overall, this was a tragic situation that ultimately saved trillions of lives due to the fast recall by Tylenol and the upgrade to medicine bottles through policy change.

The perspective I would select is that of a consumer during the recall. The recall occurred in the 80’s in Chicago (Oliveira, 2023; Shidler, 2022). At that time (circa 1982), there had been no consumer protection in the means of pharmaceutical product anti-tampering mechanisms, meaning that anyone could contaminate an Over-the-counter (OTC) product with any chemical of their choosing (Shidler, 2022). Before the Tylenol fiasco, there had not been a recorded instance in American history where a public member intentionally contaminated a medicinal product to harm other general consumers (Shidler, 2022).
As a public member, then, I would share the concern and action that prompted Johnson and Johnson’s (J & J) recall of the product. During that time, there were casualties of children and adults, and unbeknownst to the public, there were many contaminated bottles of medication in circulation (Shidler, 2022). As a single parent, I would immediately discard or return all the Tylenol in my possession for a refund to ensure that my children do not accidentally consume any of the products. I would also ensure that all of my family members would find an acceptable substitute for the Tylenol product.
Since J & J would have information sessions and toll-free 800 numbers for the American public to interact with, I would maximize them to their fullest (Oliveira, 2023; Shidler, 2022). The fear that would permeate the public resulting from an uncaught perpetrator would be something I would have to contend with and be vocal about in local town hall meetings. My trust would only be restored if J & J created some product safety feature to prevent or detect OTC product tampering (Oliveira, 2023; Shidler, 2022).
