Introduction:
- A quick survey through our institutions of high learning will reveal that our education system is more concerned with finishing the curriculum than preparing them for future employment.
- Students also have strong desire to design their own courses for future career – “That is, it either requires more skill or can be done by more people around the world or is being buried — made obsolete — faster than ever.” (Friedman, 2013)
- Here is the question: What is the purpose of college: preparing for jobs or an education?
- Thesis Statement: College education has faced attack for its failure to make students job-ready graduation and they need to make change on preparing their students for future careers.
Customize majors to suit students’ passions:
- Most of the majors that are offered in our universities are already predetermined.
- Students lacks opportunity to pursue their inner passion because these majors were designed without their passions in mind and becoming time wasting. (Kowarski, 2010)
- This can be solved by customizing majors to suit the passions of students.
Encourage critical thinking:
- Our education systems concentrate on equipping students with theoretical knowledge rather than preparation for employment.
- Schools should focus more on teaching students to become critical thinker so that they can become more of job creators than job seekers. (Khan, 2014)
Tech communication:
- Communication is a vital skill for employment but is less taught in schools.
- No matter how good one is in their area of expertise, they must have good communication skills because they can’t work in isolatiation. (Walsh, 2017)
- Learning about how to communicate and interact with colleagues and other professionals is therefore a requirement in order to excel.
Conclusion:
- The ultimate goal of education should be to prepare students ripe for employment and innovation such that they can become job creators on their own.
- There are three ways discussed in the article to help universities prepare their students for employment: Customizing majors to suit students’ passion, encouraging critical thinking and improving communication skills
