ENGL 1020-500
Essay #3 – Research Essay
Points Possible: 300
Due: by midnight on Sunday, May 6th

The culminating activity of ENGL 1020 is the successful submission of a long-form research essay. We spend the majority of our semester preparing to engage in this activity, and so here is an opportunity for you to show what you have learned.

More to the point, you have an opportunity to pursue a research topic that speaks directly to you. I will not provide any direction regarding the subject of your research; rather, this is something that you will build from Day 1.

Your first step is to craft a Research Proposal. This proposal is due at the end of Week 9, and you need to follow the assignment guidelines found on the Research Proposal assignment document, located in our D2L shell.

Note: This proposal is what you are obligated to abide by for this research essay. This means that your final essay must not stray away from the guidelines you’ve set for yourself in the proposal. If you do, your research essay will not be accepted for credit, and you will receive a zero (0).

That isn’t to say you can’t change your proposal – you certainly can! In fact, you will find that, as you delve deeper into the research, you may alter your point of view / perspective, or you may want to scrap your idea altogether. That’s fine. Only understand that, if you choose to do that, you MUST submit a new research proposal (following the same guidelines) by no later than the end of Week 11 (in this case, by no later than midnight on Sunday, April 8th).

Your next step is to engage in the gathering of your research. Your research will take many forms, ideally. Visiting the library is necessary, obviously. You will want to collected printed materials (books and articles) if that works for you. You will also want to make use of the electronic databases available to you.

You will also want to conduct your own research, if the topic calls for it. This can take the form of surveys, questionnaires, interviews, and the like.

No matter the type of research, make sure that you keeping in mind the principles of good research, namely – authority, accuracy, objectivity, currency, and coverage. You will be held to a high standard here. I expect 12-15 pieces of cited research.

Your next step after that is to read / examine your research and begin to outline your essay. You will need to make determinations as to what will be most useful and what support should be used to help you argue for your point of view.

Then, you draft your essay.

As you work on the research process, know that you are welcome to come to me with questions and concerns as you work. Obviously, an online class means that you need to excel at time management. That is perhaps even more crucial for this assignment – success means that you can summon an independent drive to do the work.

So, it’s all the more important that you make use of support. Aside from me, I can highly recommend a visit to the LCCC Writing Center (found in the Ludden Library).

You are also welcome to run drafts or partial drafts by me as you compose your essay. Simply send me email attachments, and I can provide feedback.

However, I will not be able to provide feedback on drafts without sufficient time. So, I will not look at drafts without, at minimum, 96 hours advanced notice.

This essay is worth a considerable amount of points, so put in the time it requires.

Good luck!

To receive full credit for the assignment, your research essay should:

  1. Be an appropriate length (15-18 pages, excluding the citation page)

  1. Have an introductory paragraph (with a thesis statement), body paragraph(s), and concluding paragraph

  1. Efficiently and effectively address all the parameters of the assignment

  1. Follow the substance of your research proposal

  1. Make judicious use of cited evidence as necessary (12-15 cited sources)

  1. Appropriately address your intended audience

  1. Be formatted perfectly in the citation style of your choice (identified in your proposal)
