Social workers must demonstrate empathy and learn how to identify areas for self-improvement when building relational rapport with diverse individuals. When working with clients, social workers will regularly discuss their approaches with supervisors to improve their self-awareness and refine their strategies for engaging with others.
For this assessment, you will describe a situation to a supervisor in which you may have difficulty showing empathy towards a client. Your supervisor explains that you will likely encounter challenging situations throughout your employment with the agency and that there is an expectation for social workers to reflect on their feelings as a necessary part of professional growth. This kind of reflection empowers you to be proactive in learning how to separate your personal feelings about clients from the potential negative impact of these feelings and to remain focused on your professional obligation to your clients and your ethical responsibilities to the social work profession.
Select one of the following scenarios to use as an example for this assignment:
- Scenario 1: A new client shares a significant history of alcohol dependence and states they have interest in treatment. Upon further assessment, the client also reveals a criminal history. The client was previously incarcerated for an alcohol-impaired driving incident that left a passenger of another vehicle permanently paralyzed.
- Scenario 2: A client discloses she had a 15-year-old son who revealed he was gay several years ago. She reports forcing him to pack his bags the same night and dropping him off at the bus stop. She has not heard from him since and states, I hope hes dead by now. He got what he deserved.
- Scenario 3: While providing services to a pregnant client, you hear your client share that CPS permanently removed her previous 2 children from her custody. The client states that the children were removed due to a drug habit I couldnt stop. I used drugs through all my pregnancies. Im probably going to lose this one, too.
- Scenario 4: A 20-year-old client discloses that she is pregnant again and is planning to have another abortion. She states, the last one wasnt that bad, but the first one was awful. She states she is still too young to have a child and wouldnt be able to handle the responsibility, plus staying home Friday nights would totally suck.
- Scenario 5: Your new client is a registered sexual offender due to a sex crime with a 13-year-old. His attempts to minimize the crime is evident by the statement he makes: She looked and acted like she was a grown woman. How was I supposed to know?
Choose a scenario with a characteristic, belief system, or current or past behavior that you might find challenging to handle in a client case.
