Competency 1: Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior
Clinical social workers understand complexities around diagnosis, assessment, and interventions with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations within a variety of service delivery systems. They understand the role of a professional social worker, professional resources and networks, and ethical practice.
Clinical social workers are professional members of the treatment team, and they fulfill the requirements of professional social work practice, including documentation, ethical use of technology (e.g., telehealth, virtual contact, digital services, teletherapy, tele mental health, and virtual client contact), effective use of supervision, and self-care.
Clinical social workers understand how to effectively use technology to gather information, conduct assessments, keep records, facilitate referrals, and document process notes. Clinical social workers understand the importance of professional communication skillsin written and verbal communication, presentations, case consultations, etc.
Clinical social workers recognize the importance of protecting confidentiality and privilege communication of clients and organizations within mental health settings and across the service delivery system. Social workers realize reflective practice is essential to perceive and manage how their own biases might influence practice.
Clinical social workers:
1. demonstrate ethical and effective uses of technology to gather information, conduct assessments, keep records, facilitate referrals, process notes
2. exhibit professional communication skills in emails, presentations, etc.
3. maintain confidentiality and ethical behavior in privileged communication with clients and organizations
4. use professional verbal communication skills in interactions with clients, peers, supervisors, and others
5. actively participate in supervision and consultation on cases
6. use critical thinking and sound judgment when applying the NASW Code of Ethics ethical challenges that emerge in practice
7. demonstrate increasing levels of autonomy, integrity, and proficiency in clinical social work practice
8. collaborate with other professionals in other disciplines to develop problem-solving strategies consistent with the mission and values of social work
Assignment Instructions:
Objective:
The objective of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to reflect on a specific social work competency and provide evidence of how you have met the competency through your experiences, knowledge, and skills. This reflective assignment will contribute to your portfolio as a social work student/professional and will serve as evidence of your competency in a specific area of social work practice.
Task:
Each week you will focus on one specific social work competency and demonstrate mastery of the competency through your previously completed assignments and practicum experience.
Include in your portfolio:
- Introduction:
- Begin by introducing the social work competency and provide a brief explanation of its importance in the field of social work. See the full definition and practice behaviors for each competency.
- Clearly state the purpose of the reflection and explain the relevance of competency to your personal and professional development.
- Description of Competency:
- Provide a clear and comprehensive description of the chosen competency. Define the key components, values, skills, and knowledge associated with this competency. Use relevant literature and resources to support your description.
- Personal Experiences:
- Reflect on your personal experiences throughout the MSW program, including academic coursework, practicum experiences, or professional development opportunities, where you have applied this specific competency.
- Provide specific examples of situations or cases where you have demonstrated the competency, highlighting the skills and knowledge you utilized. Choose a minimum of 2 assignments and field practicum experience that demonstrates proficiency of the competency. Do not use client information or agency-specific information in your reflection.
- Describe why you selected each assignment and how they supported your development of the practice behaviors and the competency.
- What did you learn through completing the assignment?
- How did you apply this knowledge to your practicum and how will you apply this knowledge, values and skills to your future work with clients?
- Analysis and Critical Reflection:
- Analyze the effectiveness of your application of the chosen competency in the examples provided.
- Reflect on the challenges you faced and how you addressed them, as well as the lessons you learned from these experiences.
- Discuss how your understanding and application of the competency have evolved over time and through various experiences.
- Evidence of Competency:
- Provide evidence, such as case studies, feedback from supervisors or colleagues, academic assessments, or any other relevant documentation, to support your claims of meeting the chosen competency.
- Choose a minimum of 2 assignments and field practicum experience that demonstrates proficiency of the competency. Be sure to protect confidentiality and use no identifying information.
- Describe why you selected each assignment and how they supported your development of the practice behaviors and the competency.
- What did you learn through completing the assignment?
- How did you apply this knowledge to your practicum and how will you apply this knowledge, values and skills to your future work with clients?
- Conclusion:
- Summarize the key points of your reflection and reiterate the significance of the chosen competency in the context of social work practice.
- Discuss how this reflection contributes to your overall development as a social work student/professional and how it aligns with your career goals.
Requirements:
- The reflective assignment should be 1000-1500 words in length.
- Use APA or any other citation style for referencing and citing sources.
- Include a reference list of all sources used in the assignment.
Submission:
- Submit the reflective assignment in a Word document or PDF format, following the formatting and citation guidelines provided by your instructor.
Grading Criteria:
- Clarity and depth of reflection
- Application of the chosen competency to real-life experiences
- Critical analysis and self-awareness
- Use of relevant literature and resources
- Organization and structure of the reflection
Portfolios will be assessed on:
- Evidence of the students development as an integrated practitioner and their proficiency of competencies
- Examples of from practicum of how a student has practiced skills and applied knowledge, values and skills
- Narrative demonstrates how the works chosen represents proficiency of knowledge
- Knowledge of key social work theories that guide practice
- Demonstration of culturally informed practice including theories, assessment and intervention skills
- Examples of understanding and resolving difficult ethical issues
- Example of self-reflection in practice (cognitive and affective processes)
The reflection should be submitted to your professor for feedback by Sunday at 11:59 pm CT. Also, upload your artifacts to your portfolio so your professor can review them along with your reflection.
