Sociological Analysis of Images

In this paper, you will have the opportunity to perform a content analysis. Sociologists use content analysis as a method of performing research using anything from text to images to analyze the meaning of the content being examined. In this assignment, we will be focusing on ads, as they can be a fun and easy way to examine social messages.
You will be Provided 5 advertisements that you use characteristics such as sex, race, gender, etc (alone or in combination) in an interesting way. The ads are similar and share a common theme or element, or maybe even the same product being marketed to different target audiences.

Hints: Look for common characteristics the ads use (e.g., Women as sex objects?); (2) how the same characteristics are used in different ways for each ad (e.g., when are women presented as sex objects and when are they not?); and (3) ads for the exact same product targeted to a different audience.

Next, considering all five ads together, what kinds of messages about social groups are being sold to us alongside products? How do those messages measure up to the facts?. Be sure to use at least two scholarly articles here that help your paper’s argument. Scholarly articles must be from an academic journal that is peer-reviewed.

Outline to be followed:

  • Introduction (1 Condensed paragraph)- This introduces the characteristics you will be discussing in the rest of the paper, and why they are sociologically important.
  • Description of the Ads. Describe the ads you just selected. Where did you find these images (Online, archived)? Remember to describe these images as a sociologist, i.e. how are characteristics being used in these ads? Are women using soft touch to display products? How are the actors positioned in these ads? What race or class is evident? What are the actors wearing? Maybe not just a blue shirt, but a collared workers shirt, or a shiny silk blouse, maybe even gendered colors. What text accompanies these images? Where did you find these images?

Sociological Analysis of the Ads– Start by thinking about how these ads are similar and how they are different. What kinds of messages are these characteristics sending? How does this measure up to what we’ve discussed in class? The above “hints” will come in handy in this section too to get your sociological imaginations flowing!

  • Conclusion (1-2 paragraphs) Apply these messages to a larger social context. How do these ads reflect our social world? Do they reinforce some social structures, and undermine others? Look to the literature on the topic that you discussed and talk about whether or not the literature backed up your findings. Articles used must be as relevant as possible, and tied to the content.

Note: Don’t be afraid to use strong language considering the subject.
